M.O.M.’s Run 5k Run/Walk for Cancer Dedicates This Year’s Race In Memory of Sean Collier

Annual family-organized race in Somerville remembers fallen MIT/Somerville Police Officer this Sunday, May 12th

Somerville, MA (May 10th, 2013) – The 11th Annual M.O.M.’s Run 5k Run/Walk for Cancer will take place this Sunday, May 12th and will be dedicated in memory of Officer Sean Collier.

The Pilotte family, organizers behind M.O.M.’s Run, received the Collier family’s
approval and gratitude for their plans to remember Sean at this year’s event. Sean,
was a Somerville resident, and a longtime volunteer to the race as a member of the Somerville Auxiliary Police.

Plans to remember Sean include: a moment of silence before the start of the race,
in addition to a few words spoken about the tragedy at this year’s Boston Marathon and the ensuing events, a member of Cambridge Police Department (Cambridge, MA) will sing the National Anthem, the Somerville Police Department will have an honor guard in attendance, and Sean’s badge number will be honored. Members of the Collier family and their friends will also participate in the race.

M.O.M.’s Run began in 2003 after the matriarch of the Pilotte family, Mary Pilotte
O’Brien, lost her brief battle to lung cancer in November of 2002. Each year since
then, the race has taken place on Mother’s Day with all proceeds benefiting the
Claudia Adams Barr Program with Dana Farber Cancer Research.

This year’s race has almost 450 pre-registered participants and looks to be the
biggest event yet for the Pilotte family.

“We are very excited for Sunday,” says co-race director and 2013 Boston Marathon participant Micho Pilotte. “It is a great cause and we are honoring a fallen hero, as well as his family, who have kept strong in the face of the tragedy that shook our entire city. This is our way of saying thank you to Sean and his loved ones, who helped make him the man he was.”

The race starts and finishes at the George Dilboy VFW Post 529, 371 Summer St,
Somerville, MA. Race registration is $30 day of and will open at 8 a.m. that morning. Local businesses have donated food and beverages for post race, as well as gift certificates and items for the event’s raffle. “Boston Strong” t-shirts will also be available for $20.
